Greeting God with a dish to pass.

potuckAh, potlucks. You never know what you’re going to get. Will it be all potatoes? Will veggie trays rule? Will every covered dish contain dessert? A girl can dream…

St. Tim’s hosted a good-old-fashioned potluck on Monday evening to introduce and celebrate our new prayer partnership with Messiah Lutheran. We greeted one another. Great potluck fare poured in. We had never gotten together before so there was some uncertainty about how the evening would go. But sure enough, within minutes we were diving into our mini-muffins, veggies and eggplant dip, sharing stories about the work of God in our lives. We were introduced that night by God, in God’s presence, and no dish could be sweeter.

In our Gospel reading this Sunday, John reminds us that God promised through the prophets, “And they all shall be taught by God” (John 6:45a). God will teach all people. God makes that promise. And through that promise God draws all people to Jesus, the Bread of Life: “Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me” (v.45b). It’s amazing how hard God works to draw us to Jesus. Even at a potluck.

Monday night God showed up with a dish to pass. God taught me and drew me again to Jesus through those I hadn’t even met before. I experienced first-hand, once again, that God is alive and at work in SO MANY PEOPLE! God is EVERYWHERE trying EVERYTHING to reach us with God’s love.

How is God showing up to teach you, to draw you to Jesus? Who is on the way right now as God’s messenger of love for you? Who knows where they’ll show up next! Maybe they’ll have a dish to pass.

See you Sunday…

God’s Peace,
Pr. Rachael
